Exhibition of City Models

Ausstellung Stadtmodelle

Behrenstraße 42-45
10117 Berlin

The building that houses the Exhibition of City Models was constructed by Ernst Ludwig Heim from 1899 to 1901 for the Diskontogesellschaft, which merged with the German Bank in 1929.

The architects Bielenberg & Moser added a four-storey extension building to the complex between 1909 and 1912. Further storeys were added between 1921 and 1925 and linked to the German Bank building, today the venue of the German Guggenheim. The building has been the permanent residence of the Senate for Urban Development since 1991.

The exhibition “Urban Development – Plans, Models, Projects” located in the foyer of the building displays inner city models indicating future construction projects to a scale of 1:500 and 1:1,000. While the latter gives an overview of the entire inner city area, the former highlights the features of new structures in the historical centre of Berlin, including detailed replicas of individual façades. A GDR planning model from 1989 is also on show.

An interactive presentation of the digital 3D city model and the exhibition of plans entitled “Physiognomy of a City: Berlin 1945 – 1953 – 1989 – 2000 – 2010” complete the exhibition.
